Saturday, March 4th is the kick off party for the Cold War Winter Surf Competition.  The contest waiting period spans from March 5th through the 31st.  So far, eighteen confirmed surfers will be split into two teams in a “winter takes all” competition.  The competition will take place on the beaches of Asbury Park, a stone’s throw from the famous Wonder Bar.  Before the competition starts, you can catch Asbury locals The Battery Electric and Black Flamingos, plus a special DJ set by DJ Sara M.  In addition to the live music, the two teams will pick their surfers, hosted by Taylor Allen.  You can watch the trailer for the competition here. The show starts at 8 pm and ten dollars will get you in.  You do not want to miss this.

“The Wonder Bar is an exciting, popular nightclub and grill which is a favorite gathering place for locals, visitors, and even a world recognized destination for international guests.   Like The Stone Pony, the musical history of the Wonder Bar is associated with such famous local legends as Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi, Clarence Clemons, Lance Larson and many others.  The state of the art sound system and large dance floor are a great attraction to all those who come to hear the fantastic music the Wonder Bar has become famous for!”

Black Flamingos

Instrumental surf rock

Black Flamingos are a tremendous three-piece instrumental surf band based out of Asbury Park.  The band is made up of Robbie Butkowski (Guitar), Declan O’Connell (Bass) and Vincent Minervino (Drums).  The musicianship in Black Falmingos is unmatchable.  Their 2015, self-titled debut EP sounds like an early 60’s surf classic.  Butkowski’s guitar playing is unbelievable, while O’Connell and Minervino provide the perfect rhythm for his bright and sometimes shrill guitar tone.  They are clearly the perfect choice for opening up this year’s Cold War Surf Competition.

The Battery Electric

Rock and Roll

The Battery Electric are the ultimate Rock and Roll band.  Based out of Asbury Park, the four-piece consists of Ron Santee (Lead Vocals), Brent Bergholm (Guitar), Alex Rosen (Bass), and Kevin Troeller (Drums).  Their latest release “Got Your Soul” lands more in Soul music territory while their last album is undoubtably a Rock and Roll, party album.  Their shows usually consist of James Brown covers, many spilt drinks and plenty of crowd participation from their charismatic frontman.  TBE are going to be kicking off the party that will become the month long Cold War Surf Competition.  Everyone at the show will certainly be waking up with a hangover Sunday morning, thanks to these bad boys in denim.
