Green Day’s American Idiot, the musical based off of the band’s 2004 album of the same title, hit Broadway in April 2010 and went on to win 2 Tony Awards. Now, American Idiot is coming to Asbury Park, New Jersey, with a largely New Jersey-based cast and crew. Produced by Asbury Park Theater Company in association with Remember Jones Productions, the show will premiere on Friday, July 1st, 2022 at the Kingsley Theater located inside The Berkeley Hotel at 1401 Ocean Avenue in Asbury Park, with shows running from July 1-3 and July 8-10. American Idiot will be the first show of the season for Asbury Park Theatre Company (or APTCo, for short), which is a newly formed nonprofit that also has a School of Dramatic Arts (known as SODA).

“The decision to present this as our first show came out of the idea that Asbury Park is such a big rock and roll town,” said Bob Angelini, the show’s Executive Producer/APTCo’s Managing Director. “When we saw that Green Day was headlining the Sea.Hear.Now Festival in Asbury Park in September, it seemed to be a good fit for an awesome summer event, so we just all agreed to go for it.”

“After two years of reduced programming due to the pandemic, we are thrilled to finally be producing real theatrical productions […] To be in such a nice space at the Berkeley Hotel for our first big production is a thrill. By hosting us, the Berkeley is helping us to achieve our mission of bringing professional theater and theater education to Asbury Park,” said William Whitefield, the show’s Director/APTCo’s Producing Artistic Director.

“When they asked me to help out, I took no time in deciding that I wanted to be a part of this,” said Anthony D’Amato (Remember Jones), the show’s Production Supervisor. “I have been doing theater my entire life and, being an Asbury Park resident, I wanted to be involved in this production. And who doesn’t love Green Day?”

The show’s Choreographer, Serena Soffer, has worked with Panic! At The Disco and on the movie Rock of Ages starring New Jersey legend Tom Cruise, among many other projects and productions.
